Tribalism is so rife in football that it is a platitude that goes without saying. Liverpool and Manchester United , for example, don’t see face to face. Manchester City is so fixated on and obsessed with Manchester United so much so that it’s even said that it rankles the Citizens to no end that a Google search for Manchester often returns a result with United on top, not City. Their recent title, to be sure, isn’t so much a triumph in the English League (that’s adventitious); the joy, the sweetness of it lies in the fact that they triumphed over Manchester United and finished above them.

Usually, a club claiming a double is an occasion for both celebration and continuity. Especially when one of those two titles comes in the UEFA Champions League. But Chelsea is anything but your average club, unless your idea of an “average club” is one owned by an egomaniacal Russian billionaire who sacks managers (seven times since 2007) like it’s going out of style. Two of those men, Jose Mourinho and Carlo Ancelotti, were disposed of within a year of claiming two trophies in the same season

Probably the best stretch of soccer the world will see before the 2014 World Cup will kick off Saturday with the 2012 Champions League final between Bayern Munich of the German Bundesliga and Chelsea of the English Premier League. Following that is the start of the monthlong European Championship on June 8. For those not intimately familiar with soccer, the Champions League is like the NFL’s Super Bowl — it matches the best club teams from around Europe. The European Championship is more like the World Cup or Olympic soccer tournament in that it features top countries facing off

9:59 AM, May 20, 2012 ι By NewsCore MUNICH — Bayern Munich winger Arjen Robben was so distraught after his penalty miss in extra time of the UEFA Champions League final that he could not bring himself to try to redeem himself in the shootout that would be won by his old club Chelsea. Robben was left devastated after seeing his low strike blocked and held by Chelsea keeper Petr Cech early in extra time, which remained goalless after two late goals in normal time saw the teams end 1-1 after 90 minutes. Robben was among a number of Munich players who turned down the opportunity to take a penalty in Saturday night’s shootout, leaving goalkeeper Manuel Neuer to take the third spot-kick, Bayern coach Jupp Heynckes later revealed.

The Voice paid the penalty for Chelsea’s Champions League heroics on Saturday night as it lost out in the ratings battle to the football. Figures from ITV showed an average of almost seven million tuned in from 7pm when the pre-match coverage started through to 10.30pm – compared to 4.2 million on BBC1 in the same time slot. That includes a hefty chunk of The Voice, which ran from 6.30pm to 8pm

By Tony Jimenez MUNICH, May 20 (Reuters) – Petr Cech celebrated a perfect 30th birthday on Sunday after producing another exceptional goalkeeping performance to help Chelsea land their first Champions League trophy. The Czech had a shaky first half of the season but his revival in form has run parallel with the club’s overall resurgence since Roberto Di Matteo took over as interim coach in March, and he played a major role in Saturday’s 4-3 penalty shootout win over Bayern Munich. “I said prior to the game that if we win the trophy I don’t want a birthday cake and this is the best present I can get,” Cech told reporters at Bayern’s Allianz Arena.
